2“Last Door Recovery Society is dubbed the Recovery Capital of Canada with one of the largest recovery communities. People who come to New Westminster BC at Last Door are engaged in a vibrant highly structured recovery community that builds Recovery Capital in an individual.” Building Recovery Capital is a health-care movement in Canada that helps overcome addiction by viewing the person as a whole. Last Door combines this method with the use of My Recovery Plan Software which measures and monitors a client during post-treatment. Each week, clients use their own tablet to review their Recovery Capital Assessment and their weekly recovery goals, allowing Last Door to build on a client's strengths and review their service needs. The program also includes practical life skills that connects of responsibility and daily activity. Clients develop peer support and camaraderie. Group work, directed interventions, peer support and written exercises are the primary approaches to building a supportive environment to facilitate recovery. Therapeutic groups explore themes of loss, grief, self-esteem, communication, stress, sleep enhancement, anger, leisure and recreation, relationships, and anxiety management. Family work and discharge planning are integral parts of the program.
The Last Door offers home-like settings in an urban area and weekly retreats to their Keystone Facility which is located 1 hour outside of Vancouver. At the 50-acre rural Keystone property, clients engage in horticultural therapy, recreational therapy, and wilderness therapy. For the majority of the program, clients are housed in cozy homes. Clients start with shared accommodations, but ultimately move into private bedrooms once they have progressed in the program. Cozy common areas have couches, TV’s, and more.
The Last Door is pioneering a revolutionary program that heals young adults and their families from addiction and co-occurring mental health issues.
