About Muir Wood Teen Treatment
Founded in 2013, Muir Wood Adolescent and Family Services is a Joint Commission-accredited gender-separate residential treatment program for teen boys and girls, ages 12-17, struggling with mental health, behavioral, and substance use issues. Muir Wood offers a highly individualized, gender separate, and family-centered program that serves a maximum of just 6 teens at each of their 12 California locations. The staff at Muir Wood includes full-time double-board-certified psychiatrists, licensed therapists, nursing staff, and a knowledgeable administrative staff. Muir Wood accepts most private insurance, including Cigna, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Kaiser, MHN, Magellan, Halcyon, and Optum.
Muir Wood Teen Treatment begins treatment with comprehensive psychological assessments and testing. The key components of the residential program include a weekly family intensive, comprehensive psychological testing, twice weekly individual therapy, assessments by a board-certified psychiatrist, twice weekly family support groups, and much more. Their treatment team meets weekly to discuss patient progress and make any adjustments to treatment. Muir Wood Teen Treatment offers experiential and adventure therapies like hiking, art and music therapy, yoga and meditation.
Muir Wood Teen Treatment provides academic support for teens in 7-12th grade. Their academic staff partners with teens’ home schools to continue their education during treatment. Teens spend 3+ hours in school Monday-Friday during the school year. They can also join a virtual track and continue their studies online. Muir Wood Teen Treatment has on-site academic staff to facilitate and guide schoolwork. Muir Wood’s academic program is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
Muir Wood’s Sonoma County locations are located on 70 beautiful acres surrounded by nature, only a 20-minute drive to Point Reyes National Park, the magnificent redwoods of Muir Woods, and other destinations along the PCH. At their locations in Clovis, they offer clients a wide variety of recovery-friendly outings and activities, from trips to the historic Old Town to nature hiking in nearby Sierra National Forest. The houses and grounds of all of the campuses are modern, spacious, and comfortable. Boys and girls enjoy activities like yoga, meditation, ping-pong, volleyball, basketball, board games, and sports. Executive chefs prepare 3 nutritious meals per day.

Muir Wood Teen Treatment treats co-occurring conditions, including addiction and mental health conditions. They treat phobias and personality disorders, disordered eating that is under control, trauma, and more with an integrated approach. Their psychiatrists use psychological evaluations to diagnose and create customized treatment plans for one or multiple conditions.
Treatment may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), where teens work closely with their primary therapist to develop specific tools they can use to counter symptoms of anxiety or depression, or any sudden urge to use substances. Teens acquire effective coping tools, learning how to deal with their mental health issues and their past substance use. These skills can help stabilize their transition to adult life and prevent relapse in the future.
Muir Wood Teen offers academic support for teens in grades 7-12. The program is accredited by the Western Assoc. of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and supports the curriculum offered at the teens’ home school. The academic staff help teens with their education 3+ hours a day in a modern classroom environment.
Because teens’ mental health and substance use issues adversely affect the entire family, Muir Wood Teen Treatment strives to treat the entire family system so that the family heals alongside their teen. They also educate parents on mental health, addiction, and recovery with frequent communication, family therapy, and parent support groups.

As a result of Muir Wood, our son graduated from high school (and received the highest semester grade point average from his school), applied to and was accepted to a University, was able to work as a youth counselor at a summer camp this past summer, and now has a chance for a productive and rewarding future, that we believe did not exist just a year ago.
